Melanka Backpackers is a HOLE !
Had a sleep in today - 6am !!
First stop Devil's Marbles, a geological phenomena unique to this area. The BOSS was impressed with the big rocks. I was impressed with the bush dunny which didn't stink.
Back on the squishy minibus for a 5 hour drive to Alice Springs with a short lunch stop at the Red Sands cafe. We arrived in Alice early afternoon and checked into the Melanka Backpackers. Once again, refusing to sleep in a dorm, I had paid extra to upgrade to a twin room. We lugged our backpacks up 2 storeys to a cramped, dirty room with beds that were falling apart and foam mattresses which sagged in the centre. The facilities were down the hall and not even the light switches worked properly. The only good thing about the entire hostel was the good strong showers - but the lack of toilet paper meant the BOSS had to sneak into the men's and steal theirs. I can't believe how stupid Adventure Tours are, booking their passengers into this hole - and I can't believe I paid extra to upgrade!! So very far from the quality and service we enjoyed in Darwin at the Cav.
I contemplated enquiring about changing rooms or even moving to another hotel but it was too late in the evening to do anything.
Johnny had booked a table at Bojangles for our tour's farewell dinner. We had an hour to spare so we wandered up Todd Mall and window shopped before heading back to the restaurant. Bojangles was a bar which turned out to be very very noisy, very very expensive ($8 for one drink) and very very boring. The food was quite good and the BOSS and I indulged in a camel pie and kangaroo steak, taking our leave as soon as we finished eating.
