Back to France

Merville-Franceville-Plage, Basse-Normandie, France
Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Long day driving today. Ieper to Normandy coast 470kms.

We called in at Combles to pick up a parcel that French Customs had decided to hang onto for two weeks before attempting to make me pay tax on it, and then after receiving my scathing email, released it and delivered it to the address where we first started.

It wasn't much of a detour actually and it was lovely to see Kate and Martin again, and as a bonus they gave us lunch.

The weather was fine and the roads were great – expensive, but worth every penny. We have way too many tolls in Australia and they pathetically charge motorcycles the same rate as a 4WD, but the roads are dreadful. They have been digging up the M2 in Sydney for as long as I can remember but still charge about 4 bucks for the privilege of sitting on 40km/h in a single lane. The M5 tunnel is off limits to motorcycles as the tunnel is so toxic you can get carbon monoxide poisoning before you reach the end. Again – they have been "widening" it since they built it! And for this we pay premium price. Okay – rant over.

The French roads are excellent so you don’t mind paying the tolls. We made great time after leaving Combles and arrived at the seaside by 4pm. The house was nice and only 50m from the beach, but unfortunately there was no internet (when they said there would be) and no TV other than the single French channel. Doesn’t bother me too much as we are only here for two days and it’ll give me a chance to be a lot more verbose without being interrupted by Facebook.

I went for a long walk into town, found the grocery store and explored the seaside haven. I missed the Tourist Info Centre by 5 minutes and also noticed that they have paid wifi, so shall visit them in the morning.

It’s 10pm now, so I’m off to watch the sun set over the ocean.

And obviously stolen from the UK! But was it vandalised BEFORE it left the UK or after it arrived in France? That is the question! From Kate Pegler, on May 21, 2012 at 08:38AM
